[edit]Inherited from Old Ruthenian Чорно́быль (Čornóbylʹ). From чорно́биль (čornóbylʹ, “mugwort”), from чо́рне (čórne, “black”, neuter of чо́рний (čórnyj)) + билля́ (bylljá, “grass blades or stalks”).
