[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Чимке́нт • (Čimként) m inan (genitive Чимке́нта, relational adjective чимке́нтский)
Usage notes
[edit]The city has been renamed Шымке́нт (Šymként) on 8 September 1992. The new form was reborrowed from Kazakh Шымкент (Şymkent), violating the rules of Russian orthography, which state that the sound IPA(key): [ɨ] should always be written with the letter и (i) if it follows ш (š) or ж (ž). For this reason, Russian-language media outside of Kazakhstan prefer to use the older form Чимке́нт (Čimként).
