Borrowed from Old East Slavic Чьрниговъ (Čĭrnigovŭ), ultimately from чьрнъ (čĭrnŭ, black), from Proto-Slavic *čь̀rnъ, whence Old Novgorodian цьрне (ćĭrne). First attested in c. 1140‒1160.
