From Proto-Hellenic *kʰéhrnikʷs (compare Mycenaean Greek 𐀐𐀛𐀣 (ke-ni-qa, accusative)), equivalent to χείρ (kheír, “hand”) +‎ νίζω (nízō, “to wash”).
