Etymology

[edit]

The word has been connected with φάλαγξ (phálanx, trunk; beam), Latin falx (scythe) and φάλκη (phálkē). According to Beekes, the word may well be from Pre-Greek. For the latter possibility, compare also ἄφλᾰστον (áphlaston).
