Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چوبان (çoban), which itself derived from Persian چوپان (čupân), Middle Persian 𐫢𐫇𐫁𐫀𐫗 (šwbʾn /⁠šubān⁠/) and ultimately from Old Persian *fšupāna.
