Etymology

A Semitic borrowing, related to Arabic سُبَاط (subāṭ), سُبَاطَة (subāṭa, female inflorescence of the palm tree), on which see Arabic سِبْط (sibṭ, staff), Armenian ճիպոտ (čipot, cane, stick) for more family. Connected by popular etymology to σπάω (spáō, to tear).
