Etymology
[edit]The word resembles σκόλοψ (skólops, “palisade”) and, outside Greek, Albanian hell (“icicle; skewer”), Lithuanian kuõlas (“pole”) and Proto-Slavic *kolъ (“stake”). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂- (“to hew”).
