πρίω
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Unknown. This verb seems to point to a stem *pris-, perhaps older *pri-. It may correlate with πείρω (peírō, “to pierce”), however the value of this comparison is yet unclear. Further etymological comparison has proven fruitless; the link with Albanian prish (“to spoil, break, destroy”) is uncertain, while others assume an onomatopoeic origin.
