From Proto-Hellenic *plḗtʰō, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁- with root extension like plebs. Cognates include Latin pleo, Sanskrit पिपर्ति (piparti, to fill) and Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬞𐬁𐬟𐬭𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (hampāfrāiti).
