    From Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat, broad, plain). Cognate with Latin plaga (region, tract), Old High German flah (flat, smooth), Middle Low German vlake (hurdle, small grid), Old Norse flaki (plank, canopy, shed). More at flake.
