From Byzantine Greek ξαπλώνω (xaplṓnō), from earlier εξαπλώνω (exaplṓnō) with aphesis, from Ancient Greek ἐξαπλόω (exaplóō, to spread out, unfold) + -ώνω (-óno),[1] from ἐξ- (ex-) +‎ απλόω (aplóō),[2] for which see απλώνω (aplóno, to spread out, diffuse) for more.
