[edit]Unknown, but probably a Wanderwort related to Proto-Semitic *lapt- (“turnip”), Sumerian 𒇻𒂠𒊬 (LU-UB₂ŠAR /lub/, “turnip”). Only attested as a gloss in Hesychius.
