λάγιον
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unexplained. Furnée compares λήκυθος (lḗkuthos, “oil flask, lekythos”), but this is uncertain. Kronasser compares Akkadian 𒂁𒆷𒄩𒀭 (DUG.LA.ḪA.AN /laḫannu/, “flask, bottle”), itself derived from Sumerian 𒂁𒆷𒄩𒀭𒁍𒁕 (dug.la.ḫa.an.gid2.da /laḫangiddû/, “beer jug”). Perhaps from the same Pre-Greek source of λάγῡνος (lágūnos, “flask”).
