From Byzantine Greek καθέν (kathén), neuter form of καθείς (katheís), from Ancient Greek καθ’ εἷς (kath’ heîs, one by one, one after another), from ἕν καθ’ ἕν (hén kath’ hén, one by one).

Compare with Mariupol Greek ка́тъа (káθa).
