Loaned through an Aramaic form attested as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic זזניא, זזנייא, Mishnaic Hebrew זזנין, Classical Syriac ܙܺܽܝܙܳܢܳܐ (zīzānā, ryegrass), from Sumerian 𒍣𒍝𒀭 (zizān, wheat). See also living Arabic زِوَان (ziwān) for the term’s semantic range.
