Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to Beekes, it is a Pre-Greek word, like many other words for vessels. This word is generally connected to Luwian [script needed] (tipas, sky, heaven). Another theory derives the noun from Proto-Albanian *deupa (cradle, deposit), comparing it to Albanian djep.[1]
