[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *géronts, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵérh₂onts (“old”). Cognates include Sanskrit जरत् (járan, “old man”), Old Armenian ծերուն (cerun), and Irish géaraid (“champion”).[1]
