[edit]From αὐτόνομος (autónomos, “autonomous, independent”) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā, “-y, -ia”, nominal suffix), from αὐτο- (auto-, “self”) + νόμος (nómos, “usage, custom; law, ordinance”) + -ος (-os, adjectival suffix).
