Literally, cunning, from μήδεα (mḗdea, cunning, counsels, device, planning) +‎ -ιᾰ (-ia, feminine suffix), from μέδω (médō, to rule over, protect), from Proto-Indo-European *med- (to measure, give advice, heal).[1]
