- (phonetics, dated) A common ad hoc remedy for the lack of type for phonetic symbols on manual typewriters. A letter with the approximate sound would be typed, then the writer would hit backspace and overstrike a solidus on the letter.

Unicode version 1.1 defined canonical decompositions including these characters.[1] The short solidus (U+0337) combined with the letters L and l could compose the letters Ł and ł respectively. The long solidus (U+0338) combined with the letters O and o could compose the letters Ø and ø respectively. These decompositions were removed in Unicode 2.0.
As of Unicode 16.0, the long solidus still appears in decompositions for some symbolic characters, mostly various arrows or mathematical operators such as ↚ or ∉, but not alphabetic letters. The short solidus does not exist in any decompositions.[2]
Letters with a diagonal stroke or solidus are encoded only as precomposed characters in modern Unicode, for example:
Font support is poor. In particular, many fonts greatly exaggerate the size the short solidus, which, as indicated by its Unicode history, is intended to be very short. The Noto series of fonts is accurate to its size, but DejaVu and others are not. Even when the size is accurate, positioning of the solidus (both long and short) is often poor and gives an unsatisfactory appearance.
