Etymology

From Proto-Eastern Polynesian *a-popo from Proto-Oceanic *qa-boŋi-boŋi (cognates with Rapa Nui āpō, Maori āpōpō, Tahitian apopo and Tongan apō)[1] affixing *boŋi-boŋi (“early morning”) (cognates with Samoan pogipogi (“dawn, dusk, twilight”) and Tongan pongipongi (“morning”))[2] reduplicate of *boŋi thus doublet of pō – see there for more details.[3]
