[edit]From Proto-Germanic *ōgijaną (“to frighten, to scare”), causative of *aganą (“to fear, to be scared”). Cognate with Old English onœ̄ġan, Gothic 𐍉𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ōgjan).
