Usage notes

[edit]

This retired symbol had been adopted specifically to transcribe the Japanese nasal syllable coda , but has also been used for undefined nasal codas in other languages, such as Spanish. It has no defined sound other than being nasal. Rather, it is typically a homorganic nasal when preceding a consonant, and often indicates vowel nasalization when not.
