Inherited from Proto-Slavic *župa, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gewp- (cavity, pit). Compare Albanian gop (cunt), Polish żupa (mine), Proto-Germanic *kubô (shed, hut) and Ancient Greek γύπη (gúpē, cave).
