[edit]Inherited from Old Polish łańcuch, from Old Czech lancúch, from an unattested compound of Middle High German lanne and Middle High German zug, the former from Old High German lanna, from Vulgar Latin lanna, from Latin lāmina, the latter from Proto-Germanic *tugiz. Displaced Old Polish rzeciądz / wrzeciądz.
