ıkınmak

Turkish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ایقنمق,[1] of onomatopoeic origin. The reflexive morphology points to the unattested verb stem *ıkamak +‎ -in. Compare ıklamak ıkışmak. A hypothetical Proto-Turkic *yï̄gï̄n- (*yï̄g + *a + *-ïn-) can be proposed from the same etymon as ağlamak (Proto-Turkic *yï̄gla-). Cognate with Turkmen iginmek (i:ginmek).

Verb

[edit]

ıkınmak (third-person singular simple present ıkınır)

  1. (obsolete) to sob to one's self, to sigh, to moan
  2. to strain
  3. to push in child bearing or defecating
