[edit]Borrowed from Middle French escharpe, possibly from Frankish *skirpja or of other Germanic origin (compare Old Norse skreppa (“small bag, wallet, satchel”)). Alternatively from Medieval Latin scirpa (“little woven bag of rushes”), from Latin scirpus (“rush, bullrush”).
