Borrowed from Latin ēdictum (“proclamation, edict”), the neuter of ēdictus, perfect passive participle of ēdīcō (“to publish, proclaim”), itself from ex (“out of, from”) + dīcō (“say”); cognate with Dutch edict, German Edikt.
