Swedish

Verb

[edit]

äro

  1. (pre-1940) plural present indicative of vara
    vi ärowe are
    de ärothey are
    han ärhe is

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Sometimes used for humorous effect similar to English -eth – often incorrectly for the singular, for example "jag äro," though older speakers still maintain intuition for plural verb forms, which were abandoned in the press around 1945. Gingo is also well known and used similarly.
  • Appears in some examples on Wiktionary that are actually quotes, where it should probably be replaced with "är" (along with other language modernization, or with the example marked as having archaic language – or moved into a quote).
