From Old Swedish æmbete, æmbite, æmbit, æmbeti, from Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, whence also ambassad (embassy), ambassadör (ambassador), amt (county in Denmark), German Amt, and Finnish ammatti.
