[edit]Compound of ägg (“egg”) + -a- + kaka (“cake”) The interfix -a-, from a merge of the obsolete genitive plural -a and (likewise obsolete) feminine genitive singular -ar, is traditionally used to form compounds in southern and western Swedish, cf. ålagille, lealös and nattamat.
