[edit]From Middle High German Osteriche, from Old High German Ostarrîchi (attested since 996); a compound of an element meaning "east" (cognate to modern German Ost (“east”)) and rīhhi (“realm”) (modern German Reich (“realm”)).

[edit]The word is pronounced as if spelled Östereich, with a mid schwa [ə] as the second vowel, rather than the open schwa [ɐ], which is what the spelling suggests.
