Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 너무 (Yale: nèmwù), from Middle Korean 넘〯— (Yale: něm, “to surpass”, whence modern 넘다 (neomda)) + (Yale: -wu, adverb-deriving suffix), but now perceived as a single morpheme.
