Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 어〯엿〮브다〮 (Yale: ěyéspùtá). Original meaning was “pitiful”.

Compare doublet 어여쁘다 (eoyeoppeuda, pretty, lovely), which preserves the original form more closely.

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈje̞(ː)p͈ɯda̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
