Etymology
[edit]Compound of 湯桶 (yutō, “a hot-water bucket or spouted container”) + 読み (yomi, “reading, pronunciation”). For the way in which the word 湯桶 is read with a kun'yomi for the first kanji and an on'yomi for the second kanji.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]- (linguistics) a reading pattern for a kanji-compound word, using the native Japanese kun'yomi for the first portion, and the Chinese-derived on'yomi for the second portion
Usage notes
[edit]Defined in some sources[1] as applying only to two-character terms. Other sources[4] define this as also applying more broadly to any single word where the first portion is read with the kun and the second portion with the on. No sources define this as applying to multi-word terms.

[edit]- Contrast with 重箱読み (jūbakoyomi), using the Chinese-derived on'yomi for the first portion, and the native Japanese kun'yomi for the second portion.
