Compounded from чаты́ры (čatýry) +‎ на (na) +‎ дзе́сяць (dzjésjacʹ), literally four on ten. Compare Old Church Slavonic четыре на десѧте (četyre na desęte). Other cognates include Ukrainian чотирна́дцять (čotyrnádcjatʹ) and Russian четы́рнадцать (četýrnadcatʹ).
