[edit]Derived from z- + Proto-Slavic *vitędzь (“hero, victor”) + -yć, which was borrowed from Old Norse víkingr. In Old Polish also wiciężyć, zwiciężyć, -wy- appeared by analogy to verbs prefixed with wy-.[1]
