From *džotnja, from Proto-Albanian *dzwāptnjā, from earlier *w(i)tspátnjā, from Proto-Indo-European *wiḱ-pót-nih₂ (clan matriarch), from *wiḱpótis (compare Lithuanian viešpatni (lady)), compound of *weyḱ- (clan, kindred) (compare Ancient Greek οἰκία (oikía, house (clan)), Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬚 (viθ, royal court)) and *pótnih₂ (compare Ancient Greek πότνια (pótnia)), feminine of *pótis (master).
