Inherited from Old Spanish ciruela, from Late Latin cēreola, an ellipsis of cēreola prūna (literally wax-colored plums), from the neuter plural of Latin cereolus, later reinterpreted as a feminine singular; see cēra.

Being that unripe, little green and sour plums can only be vended at the beginning of summer, this fish is the commonest stew this season.
