Etymology

A prefixed formation based on Proto-Albanian *gripa, cognate to Old High German krapfo (hook) and Old Norse krappr (narrow).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *grep- (hook), from *gremb- (crooked, uneven), from *ger- (to turn, bend, twist), same root as grep (hook).
