From Middle Welsh yscubawr, from Old Welsh scipaur, from Proto-Brythonic *skʉbọr, from British Latin *scōpārium, from Latin scōpa. By surface analysis, ysgub ((wheat)sheaf) +‎ -or. Compare Irish scioból, a loanword from Middle Welsh.
