Etymology

Uncertain. Viredaz tentatively derives the word from a Proto-Celtic *skixtro-, from *skrixtro-, from Proto-Indo-European *skr̥̮p-tro-, from the zero-grade of *(s)kerp- (“to cut, harvest”) (with s-mobile) + *-trom (“instrumental suffix”). However, *(s)kerp- is otherwise absent in Celtic, in addition to all other derivatives lacking the s-mobile.
