From Proto-Tai *ˀjuːᴮ (to be (in a place)). Cognate with Thai อยู่ (yùu), Northern Thai ᩀᩪ᩵, Lao ຢູ່ (), ᦊᦴᧈ (ẏuu¹), Tai Dam ꪤꪴ꪿, Shan ယူႇ (yùu), Ahom 𑜊𑜥 (jʸū), Bouyei qyus.
