ylämummo

Finnish

Etymology

[edit]

The term originates from the Koulukatu ice rink in Tampere, which features an old people’s home, “De Gamlas Hem” on its South side. The South end of the rink as such gained the nickname “Mummokoppa”. Shooting to the upper left side of net eventually came to be known as shooting “ylämummo”.

“Ylämummo” was popularised in 2000 by the former captain of Finland's national ice hockey team, Timo "Juti" Jutila, who is known for his colourful language. Since then, the term has been widely used by sports commentators and ice hockey enthusiasts. Literally the term translates as ylä- (upper) +‎ mummo (grandma).
