[edit]From Ottoman Turkish ایلقی (ilqı), from Proto-Turkic *yïlkï (“age, grown-up animal”).[1]
Cognate with Kazakh жылқы (jylqy), Kyrgyz жылкы (jılkı), Old Turkic 𐰖𐰃𐰞𐰴𐰃 (y¹il¹qi /yïlqï/), Uyghur يىلقا (yilqa), Bashkir йылҡы (yılqı), Azerbaijani ilxı, etc.
