Etymology
[edit]Perhaps from Spanish escobilla (“brush”), borrowed via Sicilian, in which case the /p/ may reflect conflation with Maltese xkupa, Sicilian scupa (“broom”). Compare Neapolitan scupillo, Italian scoviglio.
