From Proto-Germanic *wīhsilō, from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱs- (mistletoe). Cognate with Russian ви́шня (víšnja, sour cherry), Ancient Greek ἰξός (ixós, mistletoe, birdline), and Latin viscum (birdlime).
