Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic وَحْد (waḥd). The forms from the stem weħid- before consonantal suffixes are influenced by related wieħed (one). The forms with waħed- appear to be compromise forms.

Pronunciation

Adverb

[edit]

waħd-

  1. (with pronominal suffixes) alone
    Kont waħdi.I was alone.
    • 1949, Anton Buttigieg, “Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral”, in Fanali bil-Lejl:
u lili firdu minn mal-art għal dejjem,
u jien sfajt blata u gżira l-aktar ċkejkna,
bi ftit faqqiegħ u ftit gremxul sewdieni
      ngħix ħajja waħdi.
(please add an English translation of this quotation)
    • 1949, Anton Buttigieg, “Ir-Riħ u l-Bnazzi”, in Mill-Gallerija ta’ Żgħożiti:
      Ħarbat, mewwet dawk id-dwieli,
      wild il-għaraq tal-ħaddiem,
      żomm il-fqir ġol-gorboġ waħdu,
u bla ħobż, bla dawl, bla sliem!
      Destroy, kill those vines,
the offspring of the worker’s sweat,
keep the poor man in the hovel alone,
without bread, without light, without peace!
  2. (with pronominal suffixes) by oneself
Il-fjamma ntfiet waħedha. The flame went out by itself.
