Etymology

From Old Norse vríða, from Proto-Germanic *wrīþaną. Related to vreid (wroth) and vreide (wrath). Originally a strong verb, it may now also be inflected as a weak verb as well.

  1. to turn, twist, wring
  2. (reflexive) to squirm, twist, wriggle, writhe
  3. (card games) to change the colour or suit that is allowed to play (according to the rules of the particular game)
